What constitutes a commercial boiler?

A best commercial boiler works in much the same way as a domestic boiler. The main difference is the output is higher than 70 kilowatts and the boiler is classified as commercial by the manufacturer. The exact output of a commercial boiler will depend on the size and efficiency of your premises and your heating/hot water requirements. Commercial boilers are usually supplied with gas pipes over 35 mm in diameter. This means that a commercial boiler must be maintained by a qualified technician registered with Gas Safe.

Commercial boilers can be found in many commercial premises, including schools, hotels, warehouses, factories, leisure centers and churches. Most businesses depend on their heating and hot water being in constant use 24 hours a day - think of a hotel for example. Because of this, big problems can arise if something goes wrong. For health and safety reasons, all businesses must provide a warm and hygienic environment for their employees and worker. To keep your commercial boiler in top condition and working efficiently, it needs regular maintenance. In this way, even minor problems will be identified before they have a chance to become a serious problem.

The average lifespan of a commercial boiler is 10-17 years. Proactive maintenance helps extend lifespan, minimize downtime and lower monthly energy bills. The risk of security issues is also greatly reduced.

How often should your commercial boiler be serviced?

Commercial boiler manufacturers insist on an annual service to maintain the boiler warranty. However, commercial boilers are particularly prone to wear and tear, so we recommend a six-monthly service. This minimizes the possibility of a major malfunction. The sudden loss of critical systems such as hot water and heating can damage a business.

From a legal point of view, it is usually the business owner who is responsible for ensuring the safe operation of gas appliances. It is also their duty to service the boilers with the frequency required by the manufacturer. You must also complete an annual gas safety inspection by a commercial gas safe registered technician.

In addition to the boiler service, there are several signs that indicate that the boiler needs to be checked urgently. Any signs of a leak or change in operation, such as the development of unusual noises - buzzing, ticking or clinking - or the system not heating as usual could be an indicator of a problem with the boiler. And as mentioned earlier, rising gas bills should be alarming because an inefficient boiler uses more energy. So before you switch gas suppliers to try and lower your bills, make sure your boiler is running properly.
